“The Rock” is a composition originally for six guitars, here reduced to three. This excerpt from the performance notes will indicate what you’re in for:
“The Rock” contains two distinct sections. The first section culminates in three interlocking parts that form a hypnotic trio. The piece started with me imagining the following situation: Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen), Alex Lifeson (Rush), and Andy Partridge (XTC) sit down with their instruments. Each chooses a short rhythm guitar quote from their work. They cycle that quote, building towards the climax mentioned above. The second section is composed of individual dyads combining to form one flowing melodic idea, similar to independent players in a bell choir contributing to a piece.
