Leo Kottke recorded this piece during the recording session for his first Takoma release, but it was not included on Leo Kottke/6- and 12-String Guitar. Instead, along with “Anyway,” “Red and White,” and “The Ice Miner,“ it was released on the 1974 Takoma LP which was initially titled Leo Kottke/Peter Lang/John Fahey. On this recording, it is played on his original Gibson B-45-12 12-string guitar, tuned three half-steps low.
Around 1985, after his last recording for Chrysalis and before his first recording for Private Music, he began playing it on six-string guitar. This coincided with him adding two other compositions into his performance repertoire which he also played in open D tuning on a six-string guitar—“Echoing Gilewitz” and “Little Martha.”
In the mid-1990s he began experimenting with reorganizing the structure, integrating the fascinating B section of “Watermelon,” and modifying the arrangement to fill out the sound on a six-string guitar.
